About the Role
User Researchers design, organise, participate in and carry out user-centred research. They develop a deep understanding of the users and advocate for recommendations that improve the user’s experiences with the service. They use research findings to solve problems for the user and the team/Agency. They may contribute to the creation of prototypes for user testing.
A User Researcher is a highly specialised role, requiring a blend of analytical rigour, research expertise and stakeholder engagement to uncover user needs and behaviours and translate them into actionable insights. They plan and run qualitative and quantitative studies, synthesise evidence into clear findings and recommendations, and help teams make informed, user-centred decisions that improve the usability, accessibility and effectiveness of digital services.
The User Researcher oversees a series of regular testing activities, integrates findings and collaborates with and coaches other members of the team, the broader division and other channel stakeholders.
Key duties and responsibilities
Duties may include some or all of the following:
Facilitating, arranging and providing advice on user research and testing. This includes research activities with diverse and vulnerable audiences.
Organise participants, venues and incentives, including working with and managing external recruitment vendors.
Documenting, collating and cataloguing research findings.
Advocating research findings to diverse audiences through written reports and presentations.
Leading user centred design and co-design activities.
Advising on future improvements.
Ensure the Agency’s website complies with legislative and channel best practices.
Contributing to the development and testing of design solutions, concepts and prototypes.
Collaborating with other stakeholders including content designers, visual designers, developers, product owners, communication account teams and subject matter experts.
Other channel related duties as required.
Knowledge / Qualifications
5 years of experience and proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods
Technical skills
A. Proficiency in research methodologies
B. Data analysis skills
C. Familiarity with industry standard research tools, such as building tree tests, card sorts, first click testing and surveys.

Essential criteria
Demonstrable knowledge and experience with user centred design practices for web across complex user journeys
Proven experience in leading, designing, facilitating and analysing a wide range of qualitative and quantitative user research methods, information architecture research and use of industry standard research tools
Ability to identify user needs and communicate them in an informative, accurate and succinct way
Outstanding skills in planning and prioritising tasks, working under pressure to tight deadlines
Desirable criteria
Experience working on large and complex websites
Demonstrated ability to work within multi-disciplinary or agile project teams
Sound verbal and written communication skills and good problem-solving skills
Ability to manage and care for oneself to be resilient when working within a challenging operating environment
