Key duties

The AWS Platform Engineer position sits within the Digital Transformation and Delivery Division (DTDD), Aged Care Provider Systems (ACPS) Branch, as part of the Enterprise Identity and Access Management Solution (EIAMS) team.

We are seeking an experienced AWS Platform Engineer to support the operation, maintenance and continuous improvement of the cloud infrastructure underpinning EIAMS.

The role is responsible for maintaining a secure, reliable and high-performing AWS environment, with a particular focus on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), infrastructure automation, platform security and operational resilience.

Working collaboratively with technical specialists, cybersecurity teams and delivery stakeholders, the successful candidate will contribute to platform enhancements, application releases and future EIAMS capabilities while ensuring the stability and availability of critical services.

The AWS Platform Engineer key duties and responsibilities are outlined below:

  1. Manage and maintain AWS infrastructure operations, ensuring the on-going performance, availability, security and reliability.
  2. Administer and maintain Amazon EKS and Kubernetes environments, including cluster upgrades, node group management, patching and vulnerability remediation.
  3. Develop and implement infrastructure automation to streamline operational processes, reduce manual intervention and improve platform efficiency, including automated patching and backups
  4. Monitor and optimise platform performance, capacity, scalability and resource utilisation, identifying opportunities to improve resilience and manage AWS infrastructure costs.
  5. Maintain and enhance monitoring, logging and observability capabilities using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Amazon CloudWatch and Dynatrace
  6. Implement and maintain AWS security controls, including Web Application Firewall (WAF), IAM, IRSA, RBAC and secrets management, ensuring alignment with applicable security and governance requirements.
  7. Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and ArgoCD to support secure, consistent and reliable application deployments.
  8. Investigate and resolve infrastructure incidents, technical defects and performance issues, undertaking root cause analysis and implementing preventative improvements.

The key skills and experience for the role is outlined below:

  1. A minimum of three years’ demonstrated hands-on experience in AWS cloud infrastructure engineering and operational support, preferably within complex enterprise or production environments.
  2. Strong technical expertise and hands-on experience with Amazon EKS and Kubernetes, including cluster administration, upgrades, troubleshooting, patching and performance optimisation.
  3. Demonstrated experience in infrastructure automation and cloud engineering practices, with the ability to implement reliable, secure and efficient operational solutions.
  4. Sound knowledge of AWS security architecture and controls, including IAM, IRSA, RBAC, WAF, secrets management and vulnerability management.
  5. Experience implementing and supporting CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, Argo CD or comparable deployment technologies.
  6. Practical experience with monitoring, logging and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Amazon CloudWatch or Dynatrace.
  7. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities, including experience managing production incidents, undertaking root cause analysis and supporting service recovery.
  8. Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary technical and security teams.

The desirable skills and experience for the role is outlined below:

  1. Experience supporting business-critical cloud platforms within Australian Government or similarly regulated environments.
  2. Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code technologies, including Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
  3. Knowledge of GitOps practices and automated deployment methodologies.
  4. Understanding of Australian Government cybersecurity requirements, including the Information Security Manual (ISM) and Essential Eight.
  5. Relevant AWS or Kubernetes certifications, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA).
